Day 5 – Today in Guatemala, the day started with going to the school for morning chapel with the elementary students. For the rest of the morning, the team was helping to teach English to the children and digging a trench to bring electricity for a new addition to the school. During our break, we got the opportunity to learn more about sponsoring the children and teachers at CCAF from Lexi, the partnership coordinator.
After spending the morning at the school, we then headed back to the casa to listen to a testimony from Shirley. She explained that even with rough times God will come through and is there for every step. We then moved on to preparing for our very first VBS (vacation Bible school) day! We had about 50 children show up for a couple of hours. Together we played games, watched a skit and learned about loving your neighbor as yourself. Then, the children were divided into three groups and went to three different stations to enjoy activities such as coloring, making a craft and having a snack. The work we put in more than paid off by seeing the joy on the kids’ faces while spending time with us during the VBS. Giving children the chance to learn about God, while connecting with other Christians their age was a wonderful and fulfilling experience.
To finish off the day, we got to visit Pastor Luis’ church in the nearby town of Parramos. He spoke in English and his wife, Ileana, translated into Spanish. He shared a lesson about having a fire for God in your heart. Pastor Luis is our Short-Term Team coordinator, and it was cool to see his church. We are grateful for the time we got to spend with all the kids and all the hugs, and we are excited to see what tomorrow holds.
