Music

Praising Him through Song

“Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.” Psalm 33:3

Throughout the Bible, we see the important role that music plays in the worship of God. At Maranatha, we place a high value on music and its place in the lives of our students. Our formal music program starts in Grade 1!

Elementary Program Details

Students in elementary have two periods each week of music instruction starting in Grade 1. Until Grade 7, the program is vocal-based, with rhythm instruments added in Grade 4 to 6 (recorders and boomwhackers). Choir for those grades is mandatory and is taught during class time. In Grade 7 and 8, band is mandatory for all students and is similarly taught during class time.

Even our youngest students receive the beginnings of music instruction in Junior and Senior Kindergarten with their teachers.

All elementary students from JK to Grade 8 are learning music fundamentals and performance. They sing at our annual Christmas concert, which offers two performances with hundreds of people in the audience – family, friends, supporters and people who are new to MCA. Our choirs and bands also perform at Grandfriends’ Day. As well, they participate in music competitions.

While we don’t usually record our concerts, we invite you to listen to a Christmas concert produced during the pandemic. We produced two virtual events in back to back years — our students didn’t miss a beat in their music education!

Choir is mandatory from Grade 1 to 6 and the program is broken down as follows:

Gr. 1 – 3 Primary Choir

Gr. 4 – 6 Senior Choir

For Grade 7 and 8, choir is optional.

Band is mandatory for students in Grade 7 and 8. They give their top three choices for instruments, then the music teacher makes the selections. There is an annual fee to rent the instrument.

Our choirs perform in two festivals: Kiwanis and Music Fest. They have received high marks over the years, with adjucators often remarking on the skill of our youngest musicians.

In Grade 8, students have the opportunity to sign up to lead Chapel worship on Monday mornings. They may play an instrument and/or sing. (Parents and grandparents are invited to attend … and many do throughout the year.)

High School Program Details

Music is optional in High School and builds on earlier foundations in music instruction. It is instrumental-based for Grade 9 to 12, with music production and performance in Grade 11. Students learn performance, music history and music theory.

We also offer band and choir as extracurricular activities. Both groups perform at our annual Christmas concert, Grandfriends’ Day and our Grade 12 graduation.

As with our Elementary choirs, our High School students compete in Kiwanis and Music Fest. Another highlight is the Ontario Christian High School Choral Festival. Students from across the province come together to raise their voices to the Lord. It is very moving to hear.

We also encourage our students to sign up to lead worship during our student-led Chapel on Fridays.

Several of our graduates have gone on to further studies in the musical arts.
