Construction in our hearts, Children on our backs!

Construction in our hearts, Children on our Backs

Day Two – Nicaragua 2016

We started our day bright and early! We had breakfast of French toast and maple syrup, bacon and the three delicious homegrown fruits they usually serve every meal: watermelon, cantaloupe and pineapple.

After our breakfast, we were given instructions on how to prepare for meeting the children for VBS in the afternoon. Before meeting the kids, we were taken on a fun tractor ride to a developing church site where we did garbage cleanup, gardening and other construction. It was very hot but we managed to get through it!

We went back to the camp to have lunch and cleanup before we headed off to VBS. When we arrived, we were amazed at how many kids were there and found it hard to communicate with them since they mostly spoke Spanish. It was fun and also embarrassing as we tried to put together the few Spanish words we remembered.

As we sang songs in both Spanish and English, as well taught them a Bible story, we were surprised to see how well they understood the message of the Lord. We divided into groups where we assisted the kids in colouring and puzzle activity pages. Our free time at VBS consisted of the kids jumping on our backs, hugging us and never letting go, as well as trying to get the ball from Noah and Caleb during our soccer game.

After prying the kids off our backs, we headed back to our camp to have some free time of swimming and lying in the hammocks. We had dinner and then a time of reflection and worship to end the day.

The trip so far has been a great experience! We can’t wait to see what God will bring throughout the rest of our time here!

P.S. – Don’t worry Mom and Dad, we remembered to put on lots and lots of sunscreen!
