Bernice Black

Grade 1 Homeroom

My name is Bernice Black and I have been a teacher for more than 27 years in the public board, mostly in Toronto. I absolutely love teaching and can’t imagine doing anything else. My husband’s job brought us from Toronto to Kingsville about 5 years ago. I love living near the water and the milder winter climate here. I paused my teaching career for a few years, to care for my mom who battled pancreatic cancer. I wanted to return to teaching after she went to be with the Lord. It was a blessing when God opened the door to teach at Maranatha.

When I have time, my passion is being active in the outdoors with activities such as biking, hiking and paddleboarding. Most recently I have been introduced to pickleball by some of Maranatha’s staff and it just might be my next favourite activity. That being said, I also enjoy baking and reading; especially my Bible, as it is always a source of encouragement and direction!

Teaching at Maranatha is such a privilege because it’s Christ-centered and I can incorporate Biblical principles into all lessons. It’s wonderful to be able to have the freedom to share God’s word and teach the children about Jesus.

I am a member of Harvest Bible Church and I attend a small-group Bible study. I enjoy seeing some of my Maranatha students and families at church too.

It was hard to choose a favourite verse as I have many, but there are two that always come to mind:

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

“So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Cor. 13:13)

I have faith that my students will be successful. I hope that I can help them achieve their goals. I love them all and pray for them continually.
