We’re Halfway There (Living on a Prayer)
Getting into the rhythm of early mornings, we left to hike up the hill at 7:10 A.M., using the zig-zag method to make the hike easier. We joined the elementary school for devotions, ending in group prayer huddles with the kids. Then we split off into our work groups: English, tech, sponsor craft, and painting.
As part of the sponsor craft team, we helped the students in three classes with their English work before assisting the grade 11 class with making cards and writing letters for their supporters. Between classes we took a break for a quick snack and had a guest speaker tell us about the three ways to financially partner with GSO: Student, Staff, and Vision Sponsorship. We learned how we can steward our money better to help those in need, supporting a cause that we have taken part in and then taking it home to consider.
After school we headed back to the casa to rest, playing the card game “speed” and learning card tricks from Mr. Albano. About an hour later kids began to show up for VBS, where around 30 kids showed up to worship, play games, eat snacks, and learn about Jesus. Afterwards things geared down as we headed to the campfire for some reflection. We started with our “Thorn, Rose, Bud”, sharing the highlights, lowlights, and future hopes with the group, ending in worship songs including My Lighthouse, Build Your Kingdom Here, Firm Foundation and Sinking Deep. The common lowlights we found were the language barrier, fatigue, and the worry of not knowing how to share our wonderful experience. We discussed how to overcome these problems through praise, proclaiming Jesus’ name throughout the hardships. Although tired, we are ready to face a new day ahead with joy.
