Conquering Volcan de Pacaya
Eric was the first MCA student to get to the top of the volcano! Go Eric! Volcan de Pacaya is very tall–about 2,552 metres above sea level.
Some of us were worrying about a volcanic eruption because we heard that, in 2021, the volcano suddenly erupted. Fortunately, this volcano is unlike others in the area, and it does not erupt violently, but has a slow flow of lava. The tour guide told us that when it erupted, it took 30 days for the lava to travel 5 kilometers, which gave us students peace of mind. Also, we were told that while the volcano was erupting, the tour guides were making pizza on top of the flowing lava. It was so slow that they would walk with the lava until their pizza was done. No eruptions occurred during our hike, but the guides roasted marshmallows for us over an open vent. The wind was so intense that some students fell over. Mya was blown into another student, and Bethany had to hold on to a large rock to stay planted.
After conquering our exciting and tiring adventure, we went to a restaurant that is open to the outdoors. The furniture appeared to be hand-made of wood, including the live-edge tables we sat at. Our lunch was very delicious, and it was an opportunity for our class to bond. We tried a drink called Jamaica (pronounced “Hamaica”). It was made from cinnamon, pineapple, and hibiscus flower. Its colour was magenta, and many of the students enjoyed it.
Seen below is a picture of the boys playing a game that they invented. It is a “one-on-one” game where one player kicks a tennis ball past the opponent while trying not to kick it higher than 6 inches off the ground. It was very fun! The boys played it for their entire 2 hours of free time.
